Youth Section 2023 Summary – another great season

2023 saw a successful season for Moseley Ashfield’s youth section. Our U9s (pictured) won the softball county pairs final at Edgbaston and our young U10s narrowly lost in the U10 county semi-final to a Knowle & Dorridge side full of county players. However, a large number of both boys and girls played some fantastic cricket, had a great deal of fun and hopefully ended the season as better cricketers and, hopefully, better people.

Our U11s competed in the Warwickshire Premier League and ended a respectable 6th place, with four wins. This was despite having an exceptionally young team. We may not have been strongest team in the league; however, there were plenty of grounds for optimism, not least a fantastic victory against 2nd placed Dorridge. We also played a couple of friendly fixtures to allow players without much cricketing experience the opportunity to play competitive fixtures.

The U13s struggled in the Premier League, not least when we were unable to select our county players, however, we did manage to win a couple of games, and with a full side were competitive.

The U15s had a similar season in the Championship, a mid-table finish not an accurate reflection of the quality of some of our performances, and again, substantial development by a number of players. The U17s also finished 4th in their 8 team T20 Blast league, again encouraging, without threatening silverware.

However, the philosophy of the club is to try and ensure that we develop young cricketers and create a genuine pathway for all players to play senior cricket as they develop. Pleasingly, we had a number of county and district players most notably at U12s, where 3 Moseley Ashfield players represented Warwickshire.

We are committed to developing young cricketers and have had consistently had U16s playing 1st and 2nd XI senior cricket, and many boys in lower age groups playing for the 3rd and 4th Saturday XIs. On occasion, the 4th XI has been made up of 7 U15s and 4 adults, and they’ve won a number of games against entirely adult opposition; we’ve also had a number of U15s successfully representing the league winning 3rd XI.

The club is hugely grateful for the support of the managers (volunteers) and coaches, and of course to the parents, that make the youth section so strong, and so much fun for the girls and boys.
